NEWS FEED

OCTOBER 2/07 - DAVENPORT WINS WEEKLY HONOURS

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Overage netminder David Davenport is the Owen Sound Attack's Becker Shoes player of the week. Davenport stopped 36 shots en route to a 2-1 win over the Sarnia Sting Friday, earning the game's first star. He stopped 36 shots in a 5-3 loss to Saginaw on Saturday. The Newmarket native finished the weekend with a 3.01 goals-against-average and a .923 save percentage.

OCTOBER 1/07 - ATTACK COME UP SHORT

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Five good periods out of six is something to build on, but it doesn't add to the win column as the Owen Sound Attack came close but dropped a pair of weekend games. The squad lost 5-3 in Saginaw Saturday despite solid goaltending by overager David Davenport and then the Attack dropped a 7-4 decision to Sault Ste. Marie Sunday. "I thought we played well in probably close to five periods but we had some mental lapses that cost us some hockey games," said Owen Sound coach Mark Reeds. "We put ourselves in a position both nights after a poor second period to get ourselves back into the game." Wayne Simmonds scored twice while Matt Carter and Scott Tregunna added singles on Sunday for the Attack (1-4-0-0, fourth in the Midwest Division).  Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 28/07 - ATTACK CUT CONWAY LOOSE

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Neil Conway was everything the Owen Sound Attack would want in a back-up goalie. He never complained, he worked hard and he was a good team guy. But the 19-year-old Concord, Ohio, native never rose up to meet the challenge of being a first-string goalie in the Ontario Hockey League, prompting the Attack to release the veteran backup after parts of four seasons in Owen Sound. "He was the first player I called (after becoming GM) and I told him I wanted him to take charge right away," general manager Dale DeGray said Thursday. "I wanted him to be THE guy. He came in and played OK but OK isn't good enough. I just felt it was time for a fresh start and I'd rather do it now than do it later." Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 26/07 - SIMMONDS PLANS TO PLAY BETTER

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Wayne Simmonds took a red-eye flight from Los Angeles so he could make it to practice with the Owen Sound Attack. But while the body was here, the rest of him didn't catch up in time for the right-winger to play his usual robust style of hockey on the weekend. Now the 19-year-old Scarborough native is hoping he's put his jet lag behind him so he can become the offensive dynamo that his Ontario Hockey League squad desperately needs. Simmonds is the Attack's second-highest returning scorer. He had 23 goals and 26 assists in 66 games last season. "I don't think I performed to the best of my abilities on the weekend," Simmonds said Tuesday. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 26/07 - SURPRISING RELEASES BY ATTACK

www.attackhockey.com - The Owen Sound Attack shook things up today, making some necessary moves in order to trim down the roster. The Attack have released 4th year goaltender Neil Conway, Anthony Soboczynski and Guy Carteciano. Read more here.

 SEPTEMBER 26/07 - FRED WALLACE'S BENCH TALK

www.radioowensound.com - The balancing act in hockey, and in junior hockey continues and is exemplified by the Owen Sound Attack. Ideally, Attack General Manager Dale DeGray and Head Coach Mark Reeds want to carry a roster of 22 players, again ideally, with one extra forward and one extra defenceman. However, after last weekend, the Attack find themselves with too many forwards, too many goalies and too few defenders. Now the re-balancing act starts. Around the league, it's said that both the Kitchener Rangers and the Attack have placed a series of names up for trade discussion or waiver purposes. With Owen Sound, the list of players is said to be 4 deep, albeit, one of the four names listed is Thomas Kana who...............ah, let's leave that story alone. Nevertheless, in a perfect world, G.M. DeGray would like to part with two forwards with OHL experience, bring in a defender and have one of either Neil Conway or David Davenport claim a goaltending position, along with rookie Tyler Beskorowany. Beskorowany is staying, one of the other two is departing as the balancing act in Owen Sound is in full motion. I'm Fred Wallace.

www.nhl.com - Patrick Kane, Jack Johnson, Bobby Ryan … The list of talented rookie players in the West is a long one, and that’s great news for hockey fans. Read more here.

www.falconsahl.com - Two former Attack players, Theo Peckham and Robert Gherson are in the Falcons' camp. An audio clip with former Attack and current Falcons Assistant Coach David Bell can be heard by clicking here.

SEPTEMBER 24/07 - ATTACK DROP HOME OPENER

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Joey Hishon did his best not to smile. Happy to have scored his first Ontario Hockey League goal, the rookie centre only had 46 seconds to celebrate before the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds replied with a goal of their own. "I tried to wipe the smile off my face but I was just too happy and I couldn't," the 15-year-old Stratford native said Friday after his Owen Sound Attack squad dropped a 4-2 decision to the Soo Saturday in their home opener. "I've never been so happy in my life. I was smiling ear to ear for about 10 minutes after it." Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 24/07 - RYAN COLLECTS 4 ASSISTS IN DUCKS 5-0 WIN OVER VANCOUVER

www.anaheimducks.com - Anaheim got two early goals from Ryan Getzlaf and four assists from linemate Bobby Ryan in rolling to a 5-0 victory over Vancouver at Honda Center. The line of Getzlaf, Ryan and Todd Bertuzzi accounted for nine points, as Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists. They were Bertuzzi's first points of the preseason. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 22/07 - ATTACK NO MATCH FOR RANGERS IN SEASON OPENER

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - You could say it's a role reversal for Marcus Carroll. The third-year Owen Sound Attack centre is going from being the guy his club sets loose on the opposition's top scorers to being his team's first-line centre. "It will be a good opportunity," the 18-year-old Ajax native said in an interview prior the Attack's 7-2 loss in Kitchener Friday in its Ontario Hockey League season opener. "It's my third year now so hopefully I can step up and start producing some goals and help the team win some games." Carroll developed into a top-flight checking centre as a rookie two years ago, going head-to-head with the likes of London's Dylan Hunter and Kitchener's Evan McGrath. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 21/07 - BOBBY RYAN SCORES FIRST

SEPTEMBER 21/07 - COACH PLANS TO LEAD AGGRESSIVE ATTACK

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - The Owen Sound Attack may be entering a major rebuilding phase but somebody forgot to tell coach Mark Reeds. The first-year Ontario Hockey League bench boss isn't mapping out any parade routes to celebrate a championship this season, but he isn't conceding last place for his squad either. "Our expectations, no matter how young we are, are high," Reeds said Wednesday. "I expect us to work, I expect us to compete and I expect us to finish games. If we play an aggressive, physical brand of hockey we'll win our fair share of games." Read more here.

www.attackhockey.com - The Owen Sound Attack are pleased to announce that overage forward Scott Tregunna has been named the Captain of the Owen Sound Attack for the 2007/2008 Season. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 20/07 - KINGS BANISH SIMMONDS TO OHL

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - The Attack will have two more pieces of their offensive puzzle at practice today as right-winger Wayne Simmonds has returned from Los Angeles and newly-acquired centre Marc Franchini has arrived from Oshawa. The 19-year-old Simmonds played in two National Hockey League exhibition games with the Kings and was sent back to the Ontario Hockey League's Attack on Wednesday. The Kings' 2007 second-round pick had 23 goals and 26 assists along with 112 penalty minutes in 66 games last season with Owen Sound. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 19/07 - ATTACK ACQUIRE C MARC FRANCHINI FROM GENERALS

www.attackhockey.com - The Owen Sound Attack are pleased to announce they have acquired Marc Franchini from the Oshawa Generals. Franchini (1990), who is a 5’9, 170 centreman from Woodridge, ON suited up for the Lindsay Muskies of the OPJAHL last year, notching 22 goals and 22 assists in 48 games played, while picking up 3 assists in 5 playoff games. Owen Sound also receives Oshawa’s 5th round pick in 2008. In return, the Oshawa Generals receive Owen Sounds 4th round pick in 2009 and 7th round pick in 2008. Franchini is expected to be in the lineup Friday Night in Kitchener.

SEPTEMBER 19/07 - SIMMONDS RETURNED TO ATTACK

www.attackhockey.com - The Los Angeles Kings have returned forward Wayne Simmonds to the Owen Sound Attack. Simmonds impressed the Kings brass, playing in two exhibition games, but was returned to Owen Sound following the Kings Exhibition game last night. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 18/07 - ATTACK MAKE ROSTER MOVE

www.radioowensound.com - The Owen Sound Attack made a roster adjustment yesterday as they prepare for the upcoming Ontario Hockey League season. The Attack released forward Mitchell Forbes. Forbes, who had 3 assists in his rookie season at Erie, was acquired prior to the season in a deal with the Otters. The Attack have 24 players remaining in camp, including L.A. Kings draft pick Wayne Simmonds, and they expect to run with a 22 man roster this season. Friday, the Attack are at Kitchener to open the season against the Rangers. You can hear that game live on CFOS with Bearadio.

SEPTEMBER 17/07 - TREGUNNA TO TAKE ON NEW ROLE

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Scott Tregunna’s out to prove he can put up points without a certain franchise scoring leader on his line. The Owen Sound Attack right winger didn’t play every game last season with Bobby Ryan — the club’s all-time scoring leader — but after posting a career high 31 goals and 51 assists, Tregunna knows everyone wants to see if he can do it on his own. “He’s an unbelievable player and you always like playing with those types of players, but I didn’t play on his line the whole year,” Tregunna said prior to the Attack’s 7-3 loss in Oshawa Sunday in OHL exhibition action. “I like to think I can do stuff myself. I have to prove myself again without guys like that.” Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 17/07 - ATTACK END PRESEASON WITH LOSS

www.attackhockey.com - The Attack players boarded the bus from the Meaford Army Base and headed straight to Oshawa to take on John Tavares and the Oshawa Generals. Read more here.

Brennan Wright, Matt Carter and Milan Doczy replied for the Attack, who trailed 4-1 after one period and 5-2 after 40 minutes. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 14/07 - WAYNE SIMMONDS FIGHT VS SHANE HNIDY - PRESEASON DUCKS VS KINGS

SEPTEMBER 13/07 - WINNING DEBUT FOR DAVENPORT

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - David Davenport had 30 minutes to prove he belonged in the Ontario Hockey League. The veteran Quebec Major Junior Hockey League goalie spent the final half of Wednesday's exhibition game auditioning for the Owen Sound Attack. It was as close to a do or die situation the Newmarket native could get and he responded with several key third period saves as his Attack came from behind for a 4-3 victory over the Niagara IceDogs in OHL exhibition action. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 13/07 - ATTACK 4, ICEDOGS 3: ATTACK EARN EXHIBITION VICTORY

www.attackhockey.com - A high, hard snapshot from the slot area by Matt Carter with just 1:25 left on the clock gave our Owen Sound Attack a 4-3 victory over the visiting Niagara Ice Dogs at the J.D. McArthur Arena Wednesday night. Attack 2007 1st rounder Joey Hishon had done the leg work down low to create the turnover that gave Matt his scoring chance. Mark Pawlowski assisted. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 12/07 - ATTACK ADD FORWARD

www.attackhockey.com - Attack General Manager Dale DeGray continued to wheel and deal this week adding Right Winger, Mitchell Forbes. Read more here.

SEPTEMBER 12/07 - TREGUNNA EXPECTED BACK IN ATTACK LINEUP

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - Owen Sound Attack forward Scott Tregunna was released by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday. The overage right-winger played for the Leafs at a National Hockey League rookie tournament in Kitchener last week. The Mount Forest native had 31 goals and 51 assists in 68 games last season and he's the highest-scoring player eligible to return to the Ontario Hockey League club this season. He returned to Owen Sound Tuesday and general manager Dale DeGray said he's expected in the lineup tonight when Owen Sound plays host to the Niagara IceDogs at 7 p.m. at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Right-winger Wayne Simmonds is the only Attack prospect with an NHL team. Simmonds is currently at the L.A. Kings training camp and DeGray said the word he's had is Simmonds "is having a very good camp so far."

SEPTEMBER 11/07 - ATTACK SHUFFLE GOALTENDING DECK

www.owensoundsuntimes.com - The goaltending picture isn't much clearer for the Owen Sound Attack despite two rookies being sent down and a Quebec League overager joining the squad for a tryout. Attack coach Mark Reeds said Monday that rookie Scott Stajcer has been assigned to the junior-B Owen Sound Greys while Paul Claxton was sent to junior-A Georgetown following Sunday's exhibition game in St. Catharines. "Scott had a very good camp and we are all very high on him," said Reeds. "It's a great opportunity for him, right here in Owen Sound. He's going to get a ton of ice time (with the Greys) and he's going to be close to us." Stajcer will practice with both teams and he could still see some action with the Attack this season.
